Is apple trying to back Touch ID in the iPhones?

In 2017 apple replace the Touch ID with Face ID in the iPhone X . Since then, there have been rumors that Apple might bring Touch ID back to the iPhone, but nothing has actually happened.

According to a new Bloomberg report, Apple is testing adding Touch ID to iPhones, but it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes in the latest issue of the Power On newsletter that Apple is testing in-screen Touch ID on the iPhone and is also considering adding Touch ID to the power button.

Apple has tested both, but Gurman thinks neither is likely to see the light of day “at least anytime soon.”

There have been discussions within Apple over the last few years about bringing Touch ID back to its high-end iPhones. The company is testing in-screen Touch ID and is even considering putting it on the power button. At this point, Face ID is here to stay, and we don’t think Touch ID will return to the flagship iPhone.

One possibility Gurman suggests for him is that Apple could move his Touch ID to the power button on his lower-end iPhones like the iPhone SE. It’s similar to Face ID and Touch ID forks on the iPad, but Gurman said, “I haven’t heard of this actually being in the pipeline.”

Our opinion

I personally hope Touch ID will return to the iPhone in the future. Face ID has improved a lot over the years, especially now it works in both landscape mode and faces masks. Sometimes it’s still nice to have Touch ID as an option.

As we’ve pointed out in the past, having both Face ID and Touch ID on the iPhone also has security benefits. For example, to access highly sensitive information, you can require both Face ID and Touch ID authentication.

What do you think? Do you hope Touch ID will return to the iPhone one day? Let us know in the comments.
