Apple’s Weather app is working again, but has the issue been fixed?

Although Apple’s status page currently claims that the Weather app is functioning as it should, some phones are still having data connectivity issues.

If you’re anything like us, one of your morning rituals includes checking your iPhone’s weather app. It’s not a fault with your Wi-Fi if it returned a blank screen this morning; Apple’s systems have been experiencing significant issues this week.

The service was reinstated on Tuesday after more than six hours of sporadic interruptions, but the problem again on Wednesday morning. It looks that the Weather app itself needs a broader repair to stop the outage from recurring again, despite Apple’s status page stating that the app was fixed as of Tuesday afternoon and then again Wednesday morning.

The Weather app has had “ongoing” problems with “slow or unreliable” performance since 11:00 pm ET Monday, according to Apple’s System Status page on Tuesday. According to Apple’s status report, the problem reappeared overnight and was resolved around 3:45 a.m. ET this morning.

Although Apple states that “some customers are affected,” the problem seemed to be rather common based on anecdotal information, including Macworld’s personal experience. Moreover, the Weather widget appeared to be impacted because it reported “No weather data” even while the weather was properly displayed in the app. Even after Apple said the problem had been resolved, we still received delayed updates on Wednesday morning.

Apple sent out a statement in response to questions on Twitter stating that they are “currently working on a solution for the Weather app outage and will release an update online.” Later in the afternoon, the warning indicator had been removed, and Apple’s status page was completely green.

The Weather app has been giving certain members of the Macworld staff intermittent problems lately. The software occasionally loads slowly or never at all. A fast fix has been to close the app and reopen it, although even that isn’t always effective. Hence, even if Apple has given us the go-ahead (literally, it’s no longer highlighted in yellow on Apple’s status page), it’s unclear whether or not the app needs a more extensive update. According to some reports, an iOS 16.4.1 update might be available soon to address the fundamental problem. Any fixes must be included in a larger iOS update because Apple doesn’t allow its apps to be updated separately from the operating system.

Of course, there are many ways to acquire weather reports and forecasts on your phone, so it’s not the end of the world. But, many more users are likely turning to the built-in iOS Weather app now that Apple has discontinued the well-liked Dark Sky app, which took up many of the Dark Sky features in iOS 16.
